Start with chemistry, not marketing
If you’ve been comparing Huntsman products to lower-cost generic chemistry, or searching “textile recycle near me” because you’re tired of adding to the waste pile, or trying to settle a “polyester sheets vs cotton” argument for a customer, here’s the short answer I’ve landed on after eight years in textile processing: A textile is only as good and only as sustainable as the fiber, dyestuff, thread, and finish that go into it. Looking at the fiber name alone is not enough. And “natural” does not automatically mean “easier to recycle.”
I don’t work for Huntsman. I work at a contract dyeing and finishing plant, so my bias is practical: when a lab dip or a finish trial has to be repeated, the Huntsman brand products we use tend to give us predictable results. That’s the main reason to specify a recognized chemical brand. It’s not decoration; it’s reproducibility.
I started in this trade as a production coordinator in 2017 and switched into quality and compliance after a series of expensive lessons. Since then, I have personally logged nine significant preventable mistakes totaling roughly $31,000 in wasted chemicals, rework, and lost production time. Some were color-standard mistakes. In September 2022, our plant received an order for 1,600 pieces of cotton-polyester workwear fabric. The customer wanted a durable water-repellent finish and, at the same time, planned to market the final garment as recyclable. I was eager to keep the order moving and did not stop to ask a simple question: recyclable where, and under what process? The water-repellent finish passed. The physical fabric tests passed. But when the customer sent swatches to a commercial textile recycler, the recycler said the finish would need to be removed and the cotton-polyester blend was expensive to separate. There was no local stream for the product. We lost a few weeks and a good customer. I want to say the rework and meetings totaled around $16,000, but don’t quote me on that number—my memory is not an audit log.
That failure taught me a rule I now repeat in every product kickoff: If you cannot name the fiber blend, the dye class, and the finish chemistry, you cannot claim recyclability. Honestly, I’m not sure why some brands continue to use the word recyclable without checking the recycling route first. My best guess: they think fiber content is the whole story. It isn’t.
The checklist I use before bulk production now
This is not a full technical spec. It’s just what I actually ask before we commit to bulk production.
- Fiber and blend, including sewing thread. A garment that says 100% cotton but is sewn with polyester thread is not a mono-material item. If your recycler needs mono-material input, that thread breaks the lot. Include trims and labels in the conversation.
- Dyestuff class. Cotton usually uses reactive or direct dyes. Polyester needs disperse dyes. A poly-cotton blend needs both, which changes chemistry and effluent loads. The dyehouse should identify the dye class, not just promise that the shade will pass fastness. At our plant, we use several Huntsman products as lab standards because the technical documentation lets us reproduce shade and fastness more reliably. But the brand is not the point; consistency is the point.
- Finish chemistry. Finishes are often the invisible problem. Softeners, water repellents, antimicrobials, and hand builders all change how a recycler can process the fabric. Ask your finisher what the finish is, why it’s there, and whether it can be removed before recycling. If nobody can answer, the recyclability claim is hypothetical.
One color note: I once approved a lab dip visually and got burned by metamerism. The sample looked fine in the light booth but shifted under the customer’s lighting. If I remember correctly, the measured difference was around Delta E 3.2. My eyes missed it, but a spectrophotometer would have caught it. Now I ask for a measured Delta E reading against the approved standard. For brand-critical colors, Delta E under 2 is the usual starting point; under 1 is what I prefer for repeatable work.
So what about polyester sheets vs cotton?
One of the most common consumer searches is “polyester sheets vs cotton.” I understand why retail customers ask that question, but from the chemical side, the debate is incomplete. Polyester is a thermoplastic: it heat-sets, holds shape, dries quickly, and doesn’t shrink much. But because it is not absorbent the way cotton is, it can feel clammy in humid or hot conditions. Cotton is breathable, absorbent, and familiar, but it wrinkles, shrinks, and needs disciplined dyeing and finishing to stay soft and keep color.
Most good sheets are not simply “one fiber is better.” The better question is: which construction, which finish, and which end-of-life route are you designing for? A cotton-rich sheet with a heavy softener can sleep hotter than a well-constructed microfiber sheet. A polyester sheet can be durable and fast-drying but may not satisfy a customer who wants a natural feel. And if you’re making a circular claim, a pure material helps; the cotton-polyester blend many hospitality buyers use is difficult for existing textile recyclers to separate.
Textile recycling is local—and chemistry is why
When people search for “textile recycle near me,” they expect the answer to be a location. My experience is that it also has to be a specification. The same old cotton shirt might be accepted at a commercial recycler that makes wiping cloths, rejected by a fiber-to-fiber recycler that requires pure cellulose, and ignored by a municipal program that only accepts sorted materials. The “near me” answer depends on the chemical reality of your textile.
Call the recycler before you design the product, not after. Ask what fibers and finishes they can actually handle. At least, that’s been my experience with mid-sized mills and regional recyclers. Also, I’m not sure why municipal textile collection lists are still so vague. My best guess is that sorting labor is the bottleneck, and curbside rules are simplified to avoid contamination. But that simplification creates the belief that any shirt can be recycled.
A note for small customers—and for suppliers
When I started, I was a small customer too. I used to be nervous about asking a big chemical supplier for help because my order might be only 30 kilograms. The distributor who treated that 30 kg lab order seriously is the same one I send larger production orders to now. I have mixed feelings about the industry’s tendency to chase only big volume. On one hand, I understand that supplier relationships require minimums. On the other hand, small customers are where new ideas and innovative materials often show up first.
If you’re a mill owner or a sales manager reading this, don’t let a small order get a dismissive answer. Today’s small brand may be the only one asking the hard questions needed to make a greener product. And if you’re a small buyer, understand that small orders can’t be priced like bulk orders. That’s not discrimination; it’s cost structure. But a good supplier will still explain the lead time and the price honestly instead of making you feel like a nuisance.

Some of those jobs still exist, obviously, but the newer roles are different. At our plant, the person who maintains the chemical inventory, checks SDS documents, and explains our finishes to recyclers is more valuable now than ever. If you’re looking for jobs in textile industry and you want to do something meaningful, learn to read chemical labels, understand fiber blends, and follow a product to its end of life. That skill is exactly what could have prevented my 2022 mistake.

None of this means every textile can be designed for recycling. Workwear with flame-resistant requirements, industrial waterproofing, or heavy antimicrobial needs may not be recyclable in today’s infrastructure. Safety should come first. In those cases, don’t call it recyclable. Call it durable, functional, and say honestly that its end-of-life route still needs to be solved.
The last thing I tell my own team is simple: if someone describes a textile as sustainable, ask for the chemistry and the recycling route. If they get annoyed, that tells you something. If they can answer clearly, then you can finally make a decision based on something more useful than a catchy claim.
