Is Elastane in Clothing Toxic? A Procurement Manager’s TCO Lesson on Textile Chemicals

Last April, my sales director forwarded an email with a subject line I still think about: "Customer asks: is elastane in clothing toxic?" A retail buyer had read a blog post claiming stretch fabrics are made with 'toxic chemicals.' She wanted to launch a clean-label activewear line, and she needed an answer before the project could move forward.

I'm the procurement manager at a 90-person textile finishing company. I've managed our chemical budget—roughly $1.2 million a year—for almost eight years. My job is to make sure every dye and finishing agent we buy earns its place in the process. So this wasn't just a technical question. It was a cost question.

The question that started the spreadsheet

The base fabric for the customer's activewear was a cotton-elastane jersey from Dzee Textile, a knit house we've worked with for years. The knitting was fine. Our job is dyeing and finishing, which is where the real chemistry lives.

I started by pulling our current chemical approvals. We use Huntsman's textile chemical line for several critical finishes. I needed to verify the latest environmental data, so I went to the Huntsman download portal and saved the current versions of the SDS and ZDHC declarations. If I remember correctly, the file name had changed from v2.8 to v3.1—that's a small detail, but it matters when an auditor asks which spec you approved.

Side note for anyone who spends time in this industry: don't trust Google autocomplete alone. I once had a junior colleague search for "huntsman download" and click on a file that looked perfect. The problem? It was a spec sheet for Huntsman spray foam insulation, not for a textile finishing agent. The name is shared across very different businesses. Always check the product group and the SDS before you put it in a spec book.

Elastane is not the villain (usually)

So, is elastane in clothing toxic? I'm not a toxicologist, and I won't pretend otherwise. What I can tell you is what our audit found. Elastane itself isn't listed on the ZDHC MRSL or Bluesign restricted substance lists, at least in the products we use. The bigger risks come from the auxiliaries around it: knitting oils, spin finishes, heat-setting by-products, and the chemicals applied during finishing. That means a supplier can make a stretch fabric with perfectly safe elastane and then add a finish that causes problems.

The customer's instinct to ask was good. The problem is that 'clean label' marketing usually simplifies it to 'no elastane.' In my experience, that's the wrong target. The real issue is whether the entire chemistry package has been verified. And verifying that costs money.

Two quotes, one spreadsheet

Because the customer was asking for a documented clean-label program, I had to compare chemical systems more carefully than normal. Here's where the story gets expensive.

We have a procurement policy that requires quotes from at least three vendors. I looked at eight, shortlisted two, and built a TCO spreadsheet with every cost I could identify. Option A was Huntsman's high-exhaust dyeing and finishing package: better traceability, lower curing temperature, and full compliance documentation. Option B was a generic 'low-VOC' package that came in about $320 cheaper on a 2,000-meter trial batch.

Option B looked good for about a day. Then the spreadsheet caught up with it. The generic finish required a higher cure temperature, adding around $120 in energy. It needed a separate silicone emulsifier at $80. And when we ran the first trial, shade variation on the elastane yarn was wider than our inside spec, so about 4% of the batch had to be re-processed. That rework cost roughly $250 in labor, water, and downtime. I might be misremembering the exact utility rates, but the direction was clear: Option B was about $130 more expensive than Option A before I even priced the compliance risk.

That's the hidden cost nobody sees in the first quote. On paper, the cheap option saved money. In the plant, it burned energy, created rework, and added risk. If the retailer audited that batch and found a residue issue, the cost of a rejected order would make a $130 difference look like pocket change.

I don't want to say generic chemicals are always the wrong call. They're not. Some of our non-critical auxiliaries come from regional suppliers and work fine. But for a customer-facing clean-label program with elastane, we needed traceability and technical support. We ended up signing a volume commitment for Huntsman's textile chemical line—not because of brand loyalty, but because the total cost of ownership, including risk, was lower.

The logo mockup that reminded me color is a cost

While all this was happening, our marketing coordinator made a branded tote mockup on a canvas logo maker for the same customer's trade show. The customer loved the design, but then asked us to match her logo to Pantone 286 C on unbleached canvas. That's not a simple task.

Pantone's matching guideline says Delta E below 2 is the usual tolerance for brand-critical colors. On a textured, unbleached natural fabric, even a good ink or dye can land at Delta E 3 or 4. The same applies to the final print file: an online mockup is fine for approval, but production files need to be 300 DPI at final size. That's an industry-standard print spec, and it's also a hidden cost if you skip it.

These two lessons came together nicely. Whether it's elastane chemistry or a canvas tote logo, the cheapest or easiest option isn't necessarily the best. The question is whether you can prove it will work at scale.

What I'd do differently

Looking back, I would have shown the customer the TCO spreadsheet earlier. The question about elastane was an opportunity to talk about real chemistry, but I let the 'toxic stretch fabric' clickbait set the agenda. Maybe that's okay—it got us all in the room.

My experience is based on about 180 wholesale chemical orders a year for a mid-size finishing plant. If you're working in apparel production, automotive textiles, or something with very different compliance demands, take this with a grain of salt. What works for our plant might not work for yours.

The next time someone asks me "is elastane in clothing toxic?", I'll answer the same way: elastane is rarely the issue. The finish is the issue. The cheapest chemical package is rarely the cheapest process. And the brand you can verify is worth more than the one you have to trust.
